This parasitic structure was designed in order to experiment with combining aspects of physical computing with the precision of CNC fabrication.  The organic shell was modeled in Maya and fabricated using a 3D printer while its skeletal structure is a series of laser-cut acrylic linkages that mechanically contract and expand using the leverage from a single high-powered servo motor.  The proximity sensor adds interactive behavior to the creature so that it expands and relaxes when it thinks it is alone, but contracts quickly into it’s shell upon a visitor’s presence.
